ROTTERDAM, December 06, 2023 – In a significant leap toward advancing data sovereignty and boosting collaboration in the technology space, iSHARE Foundation proudly announces its co-founding of the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group (EDSWG). This collaboration marks a milestone in the development of dataspaces, with a focus on creating operationally reliable software components that underpin the foundation of trust in data exchange across Europe and beyond.

The Eclipse Dataspace WG is a global initiative by the Eclipse Foundation, aimed at establishing federated networks of trusted connections for secure data sharing. Dataspaces are pivotal in the EU’s strategy to cultivate a culture of innovation grounded in privacy and data sovereignty values.

iSHARE Foundation, committed to “Data Sovereignty for all” since 2015, brings its expertise to this initiative, joining forces with industry leaders such as Microsoft, Amadeus, and T-Systems. This collaboration signifies a shift from the research community into the operational realm, where reliable software components become imperative for the success of major data spaces initiatives.

“Data Sovereignty for all has been the commitment and focus of iSHARE since its start. Through open-source components for Participant Governance, a consent and authorization registry controlled by Data Owners, and Data Service providers, data spaces based on the iSHARE Trust Framework have empowered thousands of businesses to control access to and usage of their data.”

The Eclipse Dataspace WG, with its component-driven model, focuses on three crucial areas: Dataspace Core & Protocols, Dataspace Data Planes & Components, and Dataspace Authority & Management. This model ensures the development of scalable, industry-ready components based on open standards.

By collaborating with existing organisations involved in dataspaces, including the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), iSHARE Foundation, and Catena-X, the Eclipse Dataspace WG is creating a powerful ecosystem. This collaboration facilitates the formation of new dataspaces initiatives, the creation of Technical Compatibility Kits, and consensus building around product roadmaps and new capabilities.

Enterprises, technology vendors, cloud providers, academic departments, and government organisations now have a unique opportunity to shape the future of technology development in the EU. Joining the Eclipse Dataspace WG not only supports community sustainability but also offers avenues for participation in marketing initiatives and direct engagement with a diverse array of EU organisations building new technology.

This collaboration between iSHARE Foundation and the Eclipse Dataspace WG is a significant step toward creating a culture of innovation, privacy, and data sovereignty. Together, these organisations are shaping the way for the next phase of dataspaces, where reliable components and interoperability are key to the success of data-driven businesses.
