Strengthening Data Sharing and Security in Logistics with BDI and the iSHARE Trust Framework: A Collaboration with DIL
In today’s rapidly evolving logistics landscape, the ability to share and access data securely and efficiently is crucial for maintaining smooth operations across the supply chain. The Basic Data Infrastructure (BDI) is a set of federative agreements aimed at the logistics sector enabling parties to develop an advanced IT network for secure, machine-to-machine data sharing. Unlike a government platform, the BDI allows participants to create a collaborative yet independent network that ensures data sovereignty.
Data In Logistics (DIL) is focused on streamlining logistics processes using digital infrastructure, enabling transparent and efficient information sharing between shippers, transporters and distributors. As a key collaborator, the iSHARE Foundation works closely with DIL to help define a BDI Framework for secure, interoperable logistics associations or data spaces, ensuring participants can safely exchange information.
BDI has applied iSHARE standards to create a proof-of-concept for securing freight release, enhancing the security and efficiency of data exchange in logistics. By leveraging the iSHARE Trust Framework, as part of the BDI Framework, organisations ensure that only authorised parties can access and share logistics data which increases operational efficiency and security.
The joint vision of DIL and iSHARE
The collaboration between DIL and iSHARE Foundation began with a shared vision of enhancing data-sharing practices across the logistics sector. The iSHARE Trust Framework was co-created by the same community to enable logistics companies to maintain distributed control. The goal was to enhance security during the handover of goods and increase real-time visibility throughout the logistics chain. This common goal quickly evolved into a partnership focused on developing a more robust, standardised framework for digital verification in logistics.
The iSHARE Trust Framework in Action in the DIL Demo
The iSHARE Trust Framework was integrated into the BDI Framework to address these key challenges. iSHARE Trust Framework provides a standardised method which ensures that only trusted parties can access and share sensitive logistics data.
The live demo created by DIL using the iSHARE Trust Framework specifications provides a clear and practical view of how secure, digital authorisation and verification processes work in real-life logistics scenarios.
The demo showcases how the iSHARE framework specifications can be applied to deliver real-life value for logistics parties. It highlights how the iSHARE Trust Framework can effectively be implemented in the logistics sector, and how it has the potential to be adapted across many other industries.
In this demo, Janneke, the supply chain manager at Fun Fashion, needed to authorise Atlas Transport to collect goods from their distribution centre. Using iSHARE Trust Framework specified components (such as an Authorisation Registry), Janneke digitally authorised Atlas Transport, allowing the necessary access to be instantly shared with all relevant stakeholders, from warehouse managers to the logistics planners at Atlas. This seamless exchange of information eliminated any need for manual paperwork, reducing the time spent on authorising the transaction and enhancing security.
Once the authorisation was in place, Tom, the driver assigned by Abdel, the logistics planner at Atlas Transport, arrived at the distribution centre. At the gate, Tom underwent a fast and efficient verification process. A simple digital check was performed using his driver’s licence and vehicle registration, ensuring the authorisation matched the assigned driver. The entire process, powered by the iSHARE Trust Framework, was completed without any manual intervention.
In the event of any last-minute changes—such as Tom being unavailable or his vehicle breaking down—Abdel would have immediately been able to update the authorisation for a new driver and vehicle.
Overall, this demo showcases how the iSHARE Trust Framework simplifies and secures logistics operations, offering digital authorisation, real-time updates, seamless verification, and a robust compliance structure, all within an efficient, paperless system.
Benefits for Both DIL and iSHARE Foundation
By integrating the iSHARE Trust Framework, DIL has significantly improved data-sharing speed, reduced security risks, and achieved real-time operational flexibility while BDI benefits from enhanced trust and interoperability across logistics partners, and iSHARE Trust Framework strengthens its presence as a leading framework for secure data exchange in the logistics sector.
Future Plans
The successful collaboration between DIL and the iSHARE Foundation shows how digital data-sharing will change the logistics landscape. As both organisations look towards the future, the partnership will continue to evolve, driving innovation and trust within the industry.
