At SAGE, we don’t just plan—we build. To turn the Green Deal Data Space (GDDS) from a concept into a working tool, our partners participate in “codesprints.” These are intensive, hands-on sessions where developers collaborate to build the actual components of our system.
The Journey So Far
We are building the GDDS piece by piece. Our progress follows a clear roadmap:
- Barcelona (CREAF): Built the data catalogues so information is easy to find.
- Poznan (PCSS): Secured the system with robust user authentication.
- Rotterdam (iSHARE): Our latest milestone, focused on Trust.
Solving the “Trust” Challenge
The biggest barrier to sharing environmental data is trust. In our latest sprint, we tackled this by integrating the iSHARE Trust Framework—bringing key data space components together to enable efficient, practical, and trusted data sharing.
The Key Outcomes:
- Automated onboarding and contracts: We built tools that allow organisations to agree on sharing rules instantly, without manual paperwork.
- Enhanced data access and exchange: Trusted connectors enable secure and controlled data sharing between participants.
- Verified identity: A secure way to prove exactly who is participating in the data space.
Who benefits?
- Data providers can share sensitive information with confidence. For example, a company offering high-resolution satellite imagery can grant access to detailed geospatial data—such as infrastructure locations or deforestation patterns—only to trusted parties under strict usage conditions.
- Researchers and businesses gain faster, more transparent access to AI-ready environmental data. For example, climate researchers can work with harmonised, machine-readable datasets without months of preparation, while consultants can efficiently access or share CO₂ emissions data for specific sectors, such as real estate.
- All participants, whether providers, consumers or intermediaries—can connect to the GDDS in a practical way, benefiting from a trusted and controlled data-sharing environment.
What’s Next?
We are moving from building individual parts to full integration. The SAGE team is now preparing for live demonstrations to show these secure data exchanges in action.
