WEBUILD
The WE BUILD Consortium is a large-scale European consortium bringing together over 200 organisations from 30 countries, including public authorities, private companies, academic institutions, and technology providers. Together, we are designing, implementing, and testing a trusted digital business identity ecosystem based on the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) framework. In line with the European Commission’s vision for digital sovereignty, competitiveness, and administrative simplification, WE BUILD turns digital identity into a practical enabler of simpler, faster, and more secure business and payment processes across Europe.
The puzzle
Challenge and Context
Cross-border business in Europe remains burdened by paper-based processes, fragmented identity systems, and inconsistent compliance. Verifying partners, expanding into markets, declaring taxes, or authorising representatives creates administrative friction and trust gaps. Rising digital transactions demand robust, standardised mechanisms to identify economic operators across borders. Without a trusted, interoperable digital identity foundation, European businesses—especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)—face costs, delays, and barriers in the Single Market. To build this trust, iSHARE is collaborating on a solution.
Solution
WE BUILD delivers technical capabilities aligned with the EUDI Architecture Reference Framework, ensuring interoperable wallets, trust services, semantic data models, and automated testing. A central focus is issuing and verifying EBWOID credentials for trusted cross-border identification, alongside credentials for businesses and individuals. Piloting 13 high-impact use cases across business and payments, the project demonstrates how digital identity replaces paper-based processes, reduces compliance costs, and enables trusted interactions between businesses, public authorities, and financial institutions.
How it works
WE BUILD is currently in the process of developing 13 separate use cases. These use cases can be divided into the following three categories; Supply Chain, Business, and Payments.
Business
- Know Your Business Partner (BU1) streamlines due diligence by connecting data about customers, suppliers, and business; enabling organisations to verify business partners across Member States.
- Create Company Branch (BU2) supports businesses expanding across borders with compliant, transparent corporate data.
- Foreign Tax Declaration (BU3) ensures companies meet cross-border tax obligations across the Single Market.
- Company Representative acting on behalf of a company (BU4) authorises individuals to act legally and digitally on behalf of a business across Member States.
- Issuing Micro-Credentials and Verified Skills (BU5) issues digital certificates of learning and practical experience, enabling skills transparency and workforce mobility.
- Business Access to Once-Only Technical System (OOTS) (BU6) connects public authorities to exchange official documents and data on request, streamlining cross-border compliance and reporting.
Supply Chain
- Authentication and Access for Transport (SC1) verifies access rights to transport-related systems, enabling seamless logistical flows across Europe.
- Trusted Data Sharing for Data Spaces (SC2) enables seamless onboarding across data spaces.
- eInvoicing (SC5) facilitates structured electronic exchange of machine-readable invoice data between suppliers and buyers, reducing friction in cross-border trade.
Payments
- Consumer Banking (PA1) supports EU citizens accessing financial services such as opening bank accounts across Member States, with strong data protection and regulatory compliance.
- Consumer Payments (PA2) enables fast and secure cross-border consumer transactions.
- Corporate Banking (PA3) supports businesses with trusted onboarding and account opening across borders.
- Corporate Payments (PA4) facilitates secure, compliant cross-border corporate transactions at scale.
Added Value Through the iSHARE Trust Framework
Within WE BUILD, iSHARE co-leads the SC2 Use Case and leads Scenario 1 (MVP+) on seamless cross-data-space onboarding. The initiative uses a layered trust model: WE BUILD’s base infrastructure (EBWOID, wallets, standardised verification) and an iSHARE-designed use-case trust layer. As architect, iSHARE created the credential schemas and verification flows for identification, authentication, and authorisation, allowing organisations to prove attributes and manage access. Aligned with EUDIW and eIDAS 2.0, this work extends trusted business identity into working cross-border data-sharing infrastructure.
