Building a Greener Future Together

iSHARE Foundation takes a leading role in SAGE Data Space
The SAGE Data Space (Data Space for a Sustainable Green Europe) is a forward-looking initiative that aims to transform how environmental data is shared, accessed, and used across Europe. Its mission is to bring together fragmented data sources, ensure high-quality and interoperable standards, and enable smarter forecasting, modelling, and policy-making.
Supporting key goals of the European Green Deal, including zero pollution, climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and the circular economy, SAGE is designed to accelerate sustainability through data. It builds on the foundations of the Great Green Deal Data Space and connects to broader efforts like the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL), Destination Earth, and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
Among the ten use cases is the Construction Environment CO₂ Hub & Building Twins, where part of the iSHARE Foundation team plays a leading role.
Project Goals and Scope
At its core, SAGE enables trusted data sharing across technical and organisational boundaries. Its main objectives include:
- Unifying fragmented environmental data with consistent quality and interoperable metadata
- Supporting a broad range of users and digital maturity levels
- Facilitate the creation of ecosystems using the Data ecosystems as code approach, ensuring smooth technical implementation. Powering sustainable business models and advanced AI applications
A Strong Consortium
The SAGE consortium is composed of 43 partners across 10+ EU countries, coordinated by IDC Italy. With €16 million in funding, half of which is provided by the European Commission, this ambitious project is part of Europe’s broader push towards a sustainable digital economy.
iSHARE’s Contribution and Leadership
iSHARE brings its proven expertise in data ecosystems and its trust framework for data rights to the SAGE consortium through two key leadership roles:
Governance Framework Lead: iSHARE heads Work Package 4, where we are responsible for:
- Facilitate and help define the governance framework for the Green Deal Data Space
- Defining policies, standards, and participant governance
- Establishing legal and operational processes for compliance and trust
Use Case Leader – iSHARE also leads the Construction Environment CO₂ Hub & Building Twins, working on:
- Collecting and verifying Scope 3 emissions data
- Enabling data-driven decisions for sustainable real estate and infrastructure
Why is this important for iSHARE
SAGE directly supports iSHARE’s mission to enable secure, decentralised, and scalable data sharing that serves the public interest. It expands our reach into the sustainability domain and showcases how our trust-based governance model can scale across industries and regions.
By combining hands-on use case development with governance leadership, iSHARE demonstrates its value as an enabler of secure, transparent, and compliant data ecosystems—crucial for building a greener, more resilient future.
