The energy sector faces significant challenges, including the need for effective cross-sector participation, semantic data models, and data-sharing capabilities. Data governance and collaboration among energy companies are vital to delivering innovative services for business growth, social improvement, and carbon neutrality. This effort involves the entire value chain, including energy providers, contractors, network operators, and consumers, to manage large amounts of heterogeneous data. Data Spaces can broaden data accessibility for innovative energy services, grid optimisation, and energy efficiency in the sector.

Horizon Europe has supported Data Cellar, EDDIE, Enershare, Omega-X, SYNERGIES and Int:net. These initiatives aim to broaden data access essential for innovative energy services and improve grid balance, optimisation, and energy efficiency. Initiatives like EDDIE reduce data integration costs and improve secure access to in-house sensor measurements. ENERGY DATA-X, ENERSHARE, and SYNERGIES focus on data-driven innovation and cross-value chain data exchange for the energy transition.

Several initiatives have adopted the iSHARE Trust Framework to facilitate data pooling, thereby improving data availability, quality, and interoperability. DVU (Dataspace for Energy Reduction in Non-Residential Buildings) adopts the iSHARE Trust Framework as its standard to securely share data, optimising the cost-effectiveness of CO2 reduction projects. This supports and accelerates the energy transition in Europe, improving data sharing and collaboration across sectors.
