Mexico is steadily developing a data ecosystem to support its digital economy. Data is increasingly seen as a strategic resource, enabling innovation, financial services and public sector efficiency.

Data as a Strategic Asset
Mexico’s digital economy is expanding, supported by:
- 90+ million internet users generating real-time data
- A fintech sector representing a significant share of LATAM activity
- 77% of fintechs using shared data for AI applications
Over time, data has evolved from a protected asset to a driver of economic value.
Regulatory Foundations
Mexico’s data strategy is built on key milestones:
- 2010: Personal Data Protection Law (LFPDPPP) establishes privacy rights
- 2015: National Open Data Policy enables public data access
- 2018: Fintech Law introduces open banking and API-based data sharing
Institutions such as INAI and CNBV ensure compliance and trust.
Data Infrastructure and Hubs
Mexico is strengthening its digital infrastructure to support data use:
- Querétaro: major data centre and cloud hub
- Monterrey: industrial and manufacturing data integration
- Mexico City: fintech, governance and urban data systems
Global cloud providers (AWS, Google, Microsoft) operate local infrastructure, enabling data sovereignty and scalability.
From Open Data to Data Flows
Platforms like datos.gob.mx provide thousands of datasets in machine-readable formats. The focus is shifting from static data publication to real-time data exchange via APIs, supporting both public and private sector innovation.
Towards Data Spaces
Mexico does not yet have a unified national data space framework. However:
- Open banking functions as a sector-specific data space
- Smart city platforms enable urban data sharing
- Environmental and mobility systems provide cross-institution data access
Future efforts focus on interoperability across sectors.
Outlook
Mexico’s next step is to connect systems and actors into trusted, interoperable data ecosystems. With strong regulation, growing infrastructure and an active fintech sector, the country is well positioned to scale data sharing across industries.
