In the tourism sector, businesses and destinations hesitate to share data without guarantees of reciprocity and clarity on how it will be used. The diversity and silos of data within the tourism sector make it more difficult to integrate and compare data from various sources. Almost any type of data could be valuable for creating a tourism experience (like transportation, energy, environment, cultural heritage, city planning, health, etc.), although certain sets of non-personal data are useful for operators. Accessing this data is a significant challenge, as the tourism ecosystem lacks a unified solution for managing information, resulting in a varied landscape managed by private operators and public authorities at various levels.

The Tourism Data Space Technical Standards for interoperability have a governance structure that allows stakeholders to share data across data domains. Initiatives like DATES exemplify this collaborative approach by leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies to co-create enhanced tourism experiences. For instance, use cases such as SECreTour focus on using cultural tourism for sustainable development, while IBC develops innovative tourism products and promotes cross-border marketing strategies. Other cases, like Web3Tour, Tourbit, Weave, Insites, SD4TIM, and the Tourism 4.0 Demo Pilot, further demonstrate the potential for the Tourism Data Space to drive innovation across the tourism sector.

Through the iSHARE Trust Framework, TOURiLab developed a sustainable and smart tourist destination, empowering both tourists and tourism companies to embrace environmental consciousness and promote responsible tourism practices globally. iSHARE components have helped TOURiLab reduce data redundancy, ensure real-time data access, and adhere to stringent data privacy regulations, thereby building trust and collaboration among participating companies and public entities.
